The Summer Scoop

Friday, June 2

Happy Friday Bulldog Country 😎  As the weather heats up, I thought you would appreciate some ‘summer scoop’ on the latest GES news making waves this season.

Construction Update

It has been a long time coming, but phase 1 of the construction project is slated to start this month.  This phase includes the addition of 2 classrooms on the west wing of the school building.  Carl and I participated in a pre construction meeting yesterday morning.  We walked away from this meeting with the following information:

  • We still do not have a firm start date on construction.  The holdup is rebar.  We anticipate the project will get underway later this month.  It is slated to be completed by January 1, 2024.

  • The first task to complete will be the new entrance which will be located across from Valbo's.  Once completed, it will have to sit for a week before it can be used.  The original entrance will remain open until the new entrance can be used.  We are told the new entrance will be ready prior to the picnic which is Tuesday, July 25. At that point, the old entrance will no longer be accessible.  The grassy area west of the construction site will be the staging area. The entire stretch of land extending from the west wing to the fence will be closed off for construction purposes.

  • Other than a day here and there, Walnut Street will remain open throughout the project.

As the construction timeline evolves, updates will be shared with all members of the school community.

You might be wondering the status of phase 2, the gym.  We are in the beginning stages of coordinating a capital campaign to raise money to fill the funding gap.  If you are interested in helping out with the campaign, let me know.

Summer Project

This summer, we will be completing a Health Life Safety Project that entails making significant upgrades to our fire alarm system.  The project includes:  Fire Alarm Panel Retrofit, Fire Alarm Device Upgrade, and IP Clock System and PA System install.

Summer School

This summer when the upgrades are made to our fire alarm system, our current system will be dismantled, and we will not be able to have children in the building.  Because we have no idea where that timeframe will fall, we will not be able to offer summer programming for our students this year.

Summer Office Hours

Summer office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30-3:30.  There may be occasions throughout the summer when the office is closed.  Any departure from regular summer hours will be posted to the Germantown Elementary SD #60 Facebook page.

Bulldog Welcome

Please extend a warm Bulldog welcome to Rylie Johnson.  Next year, Rylie will be teaching the second section of 3rd grade.  Rylie graduated from GES in 2014.  She earned her teaching degree from SEMO and taught 4th through 6th grade English at Scott County Elementary in Sikeston, Missouri, this past year.  We are excited to have one of our own return home and give back to the community.
