Let’s be real---every family has moments when tempers flare. Whether it’s your preschooler melting down over the blue cup or your tween rolling her eyes and slamming a door because “no one understands,” anger is a natural emotion. Here is the tricky part......anger is often a signal that your child’s love tank is running low.
Words of Affirmation:
Anger sounds like: “You never listen!”
It might mean: “I need to feel heard.”
Try: Reflect their feelings calmly and remind them later, “I love you even when we’re upset.”
Quality Time:
Anger sounds like: acting out when you’re busy.
It might mean: “I want your attention.”
Try: Even 10 minutes of focused time together can refill their love tank.
Physical Touch:
Anger looks like: pushing away or getting physical.
It might mean: “I need comfort but don’t know how to ask.”
Try: Stay close, offer a hand or side hug when they’re ready.
Acts of Service:
Anger sounds like: “No one helps me!”
It might mean: “I need support.”
Try: Work side by side on a task or show care through small actions.
Gifts:
Anger sounds like: “You never get me anything!”
It might mean: “I miss your thoughtfulness.”
Try: Leave a sweet note or favorite snack to remind them you care.
Remember: Anger isn’t the enemy---it’s a message. Beneath the noise, your child is saying, “See me. Love me. Stay with me.” When you respond through their love language, connection grows stronger---even after the storm.
