Today, we celebrate Wyatt H. for his outstanding achievement. In early October, Wyatt auditioned for the ILMEA Honors Band and earned the opportunity to represent GES at the ILMEA District 6 Festival. Yesterday, he proudly showcased his talent at this prestigious event held at Belleville West, making Bulldog Country proud. Congratulations, Wyatt, for making an IMPACT one note at a time.

A key component in strong parent-child relationships is open communication. This means that our children feel comfortable talking, asking, and sharing. They don’t hold back with fear of judgment, criticism, or punishment. This does not happen overnight. It takes thoughtful responses, time set aside, and a strong sense of awareness of ourselves and those around us. How can we make this happen? Active listening: Show that you are listening to what they have to say. Stop what you are doing. Look at them. Get down to their level. Sit next to them. Ask questions like “What? Why? How?” When we reply with a “sure” every once in a while we’re distracted with devices or “to dos,” or with a sharp “absolutely not” before hearing them out, they notice. They will start “listening” to us and others in the same way. Speak clearly: We should be speaking to our 3 year olds with different words than our 12 year olds. Be clear, specific, and kind to be heard. “Please brush your teeth, put on your shoes, and coat. Teeth, shoes, coat. What are your three steps?” Use ‘noticing’ statements: Praise them for specific actions rather than “Good job!” Try “I love how you stopped to ask her if she was okay when she fell. I noticed you put your shoes in the basket. Thank you! I appreciate you being honest. I know that was probably hard.” Building open communication is a journey, but the rewards of a strong, trusting relationship with our children are immeasurable.

We would like to extend a BIG thank you to Kohnen Concrete Products, Inc. for donating and placing the rectangular concrete bollards on the parking lot in front of the addition to the school. Because the lot is used extensively for parking, the bollards serve to protect the building from being hit by a runaway vehicle.

Next week, the Student Council is excited to kick off their fall fundraiser, Basket of Blessings, for the holiday season. The goal is to raise enough money to create and deliver special baskets filled with essential items and gift cards as part of this year’s Christmas Campaign. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items to include in each basket. This year, we are honored to support 10 Germantown families whom we have ‘adopted’ for the holiday season, helping to spread joy and provide a little extra comfort. Please join us in making a difference for these families. Your support, donations, and generosity will mean so much.

Last week, we shared how being flexible parents can help us better meet the needs of our children (and ourselves). We can adapt our plans and our mindset to better navigate changes that arise. Giving choices is another way to be flexible. Life is all about choices. There are consequences (positive and negative) to every choice we make, but we do have choices. By giving our kids choices, we can help them feel more empowered, help them gain independence and responsibility. They likely won’t be nearly as resistant as when it’s “my way or the highway.” Here are some examples: Do you want to clean your room now or in 10 minutes? Are you taking a bath or shower? Are you cleaning your room tonight, or saving it for Saturday morning? You may go to your room or go for a walk outside (this is a cue for “I need space.”). Do you want to take 2 or 3 more bites of your supper? Are you hanging out with your friends on Friday or Saturday night? Providing choices is not “gentle parenting.” It is not letting kids have whatever they want. If used correctly, it can be a simple way to get the results you desire in a much healthier and happier way.
