Game Day 110824
Many of us were raised with rigid rules and consequences, and therefore, this is the only parenting style we know. Holding our kids accountable for their actions and having clear boundaries is an important part of raising happy, healthy, balanced children. Rigidity, however, does not always allow us to support our children as their (and our own) needs change. By being extra flexible, we adjust our parenting style, communication, plan, etc. to accommodate changing needs, moods, and situations. Here are some examples of what this may look like: Your 12 year old daughter is feeling isolated from her friends. Instead of telling her to suck it up and reminding her that life is hard, try pushing her bedtime back 20 minutes to give her individual attention (read a book together, go for a walk, play a game). Give her the connection that she is missing from her peers. Your 6 year old son is crabby this week. He’s tired, whiny, and just appears to be struggling. You know your family has been extra busy, and that there hasn’t been a whole lot of downtime. You have a no screen time rule on weeknights. What if you cancelled your evening plans, flexed that rule a bit, and offered 30 minutes to sit together and watch a show and just wind down? Your teen is asking to stay out past curfew to go to a concert with friends. She’s honest, plans ahead to complete schoolwork before, and has a plan for when she’ll do her chores. You say “No. Rules are rules. Curfew never changes.” Chances are that she may just lie the next time. If after evaluating, the answer is still no, explain why. She may not understand or agree, but she’ll know you have at least considered, and will hopefully stay open with you in the future. Remember, flexibility in parenting doesn’t mean a lack of boundaries or accountability; it means making space for empathy, adaptability, and connection as we navigate the evolving needs of our children.

Family Night
Do you have a passion for working with children? Would you like to work in a school setting with a family atmosphere that embraces creativity and a team approach? Are you interested in working school hours only, so your work schedule is the same as the children in your life? Are you graduating with a teaching degree in December and want an opportunity to gain hands-on experience alongside seasoned educators in a supportive and collaborative environment? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, this is a great prospective job for you. Germantown Elementary School is looking to fill a full time substitute teacher position. This position entails covering maternity leaves and any other miscellaneous faculty and staff absences. Hours are 8:30-3:00 every day that school is in session. While certification to teach in Illinois is preferred, substitute teaching certification meets the requirements of the job. The salary will be competitive and discussed with the candidates during the interview process. Interested candidates are asked to contact Robin Becker via email: rbecker@ges60.org, school phone: (618)523-4253, or cell phone: (618)830-5209. Interviews will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Ask a question, and then be.....quiet. We all, adults and children, have a desire to be heard and understood. In order to truly understand each other, we have to ask questions, and we have to actually listen to the answer. In order to actually listen, we have to be quiet. In doing this, we’re modeling good listening skills (important skills in life). Here are some more reasons why this is such an essential skill: We’re showing we care what they have to say. When we interrupt, we make it all about us. Wait time - Sometimes it just takes time to listen and formulate a response. Give that time. They have important things to say. No pressure - It can be frustrating or annoying when there is pressure to respond quickly. When asking questions, we should also be aware of what we’re looking for. Was our question truly to seek information or understanding? Were we, without even realizing it, asking a question to put down? Was the question necessary? How will we respond if we don’t get the answer we’re looking for? Do we want our kids to have and express their own thoughts, or just answer in the way that elicits a positive response? Question carefully. Listen thoughtfully. Love fully.
