Independence in our kids is a MAGICAL thing. Getting there can also be really, really hard. Think about your 2 year old who is dead set on doing everything on their own, and your pre-teen who is trying to spread her wings and fly (regardless of what your opinions are). When we use the love languages intentionally, they can do more than make kids feel loved. They can also help them grow into confident, capable, and independent people. Here’s how each love language can encourage independence while keeping your connection strong:
Words of Affirmation: Kids thrive on hearing, “I believe in you!”
Try: Instead of doing a task for your child, cheer them on as they try it themselves.
Quality Time: One on one time doesn’t always have to mean entertainment---it can be everyday moments.
Try: Folding laundry, doing dishes, or walking the dog together.
Physical Touch: A reassuring hug, high five, or a shoulder pat can be the confidence boost kids need to try new things.
Try: When they’re struggling to figure something out, use physical touch to say, “I’m here, and you got this.”
Acts of Service: When our kids are little, we do so much for them. As they grow, our acts of service can shift from doing for them to doing with them.
Try: Cooking dinner side by side or teaching them how to pack their own lunch.
Gifts: A meaningful gift can be a tool for growth.
Try: Giving a small plant to care for, a notebook for goal-setting, or a watch to manage time.
Remember: The goal isn't to let go all at once---it’s to step back slowly while still showing love in the way your child best receives it. Love fuels confidence. Confidence builds independence.
